Some SEMA pics to check out. The show was very entertaining and very busy. I have some pictures for you. I’ll get into more details.

So someone asked me where they find their steering box. Pretty basic for some, but the only dumb question is the one that is not asked.

This is a 1971 Toyota Landcruiser Steering Box and is currently manual steering. In the picture below I added info about the steering box, the coupler and the shaft. You can also see no hoses, so it is manual steering. They shaft connects up to the column and eventually the steering wheel. Every vehicle is different, but you get the general idea.

The question here involved converting to a power steering box and how that would go. Power boxes are almost always bigger in size. The first thing to notice is that there is plenty of room for a bigger box. You could modify everything here to fit a power box without much trouble. You would need to change the coupler and pitman arm. You would also need a steering pump, bracket and hoses.

I am playing with new themes all week. Please post your comments on which themes you like and which you don’t.

Please also let me know if you are having browser issues. Some of the themes do not play well with different browsers and different sizes.

Yesterday we discussed the accumulator in the air conditioning compressor system and what it looks like. Today we are going to look at AC Reciever Drier and what it looks like and what is does.

The Receiver drier is an auto air conditioning part. It is a filter on the air conditioning system. It has a tube of dessicant internally that is used to pull moisture and debris from the system. Pulling this moisture and debris is crutial for lasting performane. A Compressor might work for awhile with an old one, but it will cause it to fail quickly.

The Drier was used commonly on Japanese vehicles such as the Nissan AC Compressor system. These vehicles use an expansion device instead of an orifice tube. This expansion device serves as the release point on the system.

The drier is typically located near the condenser and often mounted to it. Unlike the accumulator which has to be near the evaporator. The drier works right after the compressor and before the condenser, thus it is usually mounted near the condenser.

Its should be pretty common knowledge, but you should always keep the coolant level full. Engine coolant helps keep the temperature of the engine in normal range. Low coolant level cause the engine overheating, which is vital for the engine. Also true is that it keeps the engine from freezing.

How to check the engine coolant fluid level:
The coolant level should be between “LOW” and “FULL” marks in the coolant expansion tank as in the picture. If it’s lower, you should top it up. If there is no coolant in the expansion tank at all, you should add the coolant into the radiator also. But remember, NEVER open the radiator or the expansion tank cap when engine is hot! It can burn you and cause serious damage.

When engine temperature is close to normal, which is usually at least 10 minutes after the engine is off , simply add coolant into the expansion to “FULL” mark. and into the radiator if needed.

Remember, you should also flush the system every 60-90K miles. This ensure that no build up or contamination gets in there. This should be done more frequently if you are driving off road, in high temps, or high mileage. All of these parts and more Toyota parts can be found at BuyAutoParts.com. One of the best cars I ever had was a Ford. It didn’t look like much, but it had a V8 under the hood and was highly maneuverable. It would have lasted a lot longer if I’d known where to get the best Ford parts instead of taking it to a shop where they didn’t really know what they were doing. But these days almost everybody is able to get the discount auto parts that they need, because there is so much inventory available online. You still have to be careful though, and make sure you are dealing with experts like buyautoparts.com.
